Event Details
We'd like to invite you to visit the annual STAR-TIDES* Fall field demonstration in Washington, DC at the National Defense University (NDU) campus from Monday, October 6 to Friday, October 10.
This event will be live all week, please feel free to visit anytime during normal working hours to interact, see, and discuss the policies, practices, technologies, and organizations that affect Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief, Stabilization and Reconstruction, and Building Partnership Capacity. All activities will be independent of the power grid, and communications will be live. This event will feature active demonstrations in the following four scenarios throughout the entire week:
· Stabilization and Reconstruction in Afghanistan (Many individuals and organizations who are currently working in Afghanistan will be here to discuss and share ideas. This will focus largely on info sharing/sensemaking, links to the Fab Lab near Jalalabad, near-real-time delivery of imagery and information without caveats to NGOs, and infrastructure solutions that are appropriate)
· Disaster relief in the US - based on a disaster scenario in the National Capital Region, (Participants include Monmouth University's Rapid Response Institute, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region, Resilience Networks, and many vendors with the latest IT/communications technology.)
· Refugee Camp in Sub-Sahara Africa - family-sized solution set oriented towards hot, dry areas (solar cooking, small solar panels, water pasteurization bags, Inveneo computers, One Laptop Per Child computers, etc.)
· Disaster relief in Central America - a camp-sized infrastructure for wet, tropical regions (wind and solar power solutions, water purification units, disaster management software, etc).
If you'd like visit the demo for an hour or two during the week, please enter your information in the "Attendee" box.
If you'd like to be a full participant, demonstrate ideas and technologies throughout the week, please click "Exhibitor" above, and we will contact you.
Demo will be open from 8-5 each day. (Except Monday morning will be set-up, and Friday afternoon will be break-down.)
We highly recommend using the Metro (subway). The Waterfront-SEU stop is just north of Fort McNair and is in easy walking distance. If you must drive, then please park at the new Lincoln Hall lot. http://www.ndu.edu/info/visitingNDU.cfm
*STAR-TIDES = Sustainable Technologies, Accelerated Research - Transportable Infrastructures for Development and Emergency Support
STAR-TIDES promotes affordable, sustainable, support to stressed populations—post-disaster, impoverished, or post-war. Situations include: Domestic and foreign, short-term or long-term, military involved, or not. STAR-TIDES leverages a network ranging from Iceland to Singapore that includes diverse individual skills and participants from non-governmental organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, US and foreign armed forces, and commercial firms. Network members have offered innovative solutions to problems ranging from Bangladesh flooding to FEMA trailer replacement to Canadian Arctic shelters. It is an international research project to promote unity of effort among diverse organizations where there is no unity of control. As such it seeks to build bridges across boundaries between business, civil society and government stakeholders who are working toward common goals. The principal means are: (1) trust building and social network development, (2) sharing information and “sense-making” approaches and (3) low-cost logistic solutions.
There will also be "Brown bag" speakers at 12:30 with the following schedule:
Mon - Dr. Wells - TIDES Intro/Overview
Tues - w/ the NDU S&R Working group - led jointly by Andy Leith and Dr. Wells
Wed - Larry Wentz - ICT and lessons from Myanmar - Cyclone Nargis Disaster
